How YouthBuild Helped Jason Reach His Goals!

Before the age of sixteen, Jason spent time in and out of the Juvenile Justice System. “I wasn’t doing the wrong thing, but I wasn’t doing the right thing either,” he says. He was spending time with older youth that did not always lead him into making the best choices for himself, and that lead to some issues with the law. He had a hard time fitting into high school, and he was not getting along with many of the teachers, staff and students in the school. Because he spent more time hanging out with friends than going to classes, by his junior year he had dropped out of high school. Without a GED or diploma, he was able to find minimum wage jobs here and there, but Jason felt he needed to complete his education and develop better work skills to get ahead.

Jason heard about YouthBuild from friends that had been in similar situations and had found success in the program. He viewed it as a way to get help attaining his GED and to receive valuable job training. In particular, the industry recognized certifications that he would be able to attain–Lead Safety and Duct Sealing–appealed to him. They would enable him, along with hands-on training on construction job sites, to find a better job and work toward a career in a construction-related field. The chance to build a house for a low-income family in the town in which he lived was also exciting to him as it was an opportunity to help his own community.

Jason found the program a great opportunity. Staff and students were “really cool and helpful”, and provided the support he needed so he could reach his goals. During his time in the program, Jason only missed one scheduled program day. He took advantage of every opportunity offered, earning two industry-recognized credentials and several certifications. He earned his GED at the end of September. CSC YouthBuild is currently assisting him in locating full-time employment. He is thankful for the opportunities and support the program has provided and continues to provide.
